Photos from Half the Sky of Sophie's Orphanage in Chengdu

"On the afternoon of Monday, May 12, 2008, a massive earthquake, measuring 7.8 on the Richter Scale, rocked China. The epicenter was Wenchuan County, Sichuan, northwest of Chengdu. CHENGDU CHILDREN'S WELFARE INSTITUTION - The children are all well. They all sleep on the first floor of the children's building and, for their safety, are kept outside during their waking hours."

Just look at their sweet faces! (Does the little girl on the far right, in the pink jacket with a flower on it look like Sophie?? Just don't know because she has changed so much since our last photo from around Novemeber.)

I am sure these are some of Sophie's friends!!?!

Half the Sky has posted a few photos from Sophie's Orphanage in Chengdu. These photos are from their web site.

I have searched these photos for Sophie but I don't see her....on the other hand the only photo's we have of her are from November 2008 or later.....It is hard for me to see these photos but also good at the same time. Hard to explain.

"HANZHONG COUNTY SOCIAL WELFARE INSTITUTION, SHAANXI - Cracked walls and a crumbling foundation forced the children and caregivers of this small orphanage close to the Sichuan border to take shelter in tents. All are fine."

Please click on the link below to see more where I gathered these quotes and photos from, The Half the Sky web site. We are FOREVER thankful for seeing these and learning more information.

We have been getting all of our most up to date info from Half the Sky as well. Like you said, as a mom of one of the children there, it is helpful, but upsetting all at the same time. I had a hard time today knowing that the orphanage was requesting warm blankets. My heart just breaks that these sweet kids are going to bed cold, but so thankful that things aren't worse. I know you are hoping to travel soon. We would like to contribute money for you to buy whatever the things are the orphanage needs right now. I also scrolled down a bit on your blog and saw the orphanage photos from April. I was searching for our Caleb, but didn't see him. However, the most recent Half the Sky photo that you have posted today (which I just received today as well)has a boy in a blue sweater that may just be our Caleb. We can't tell for sure. Please please please do post as many pictures as you can from your orphanage visit when you are there. We would LOVE to be able to see as much as we can of Caleb's home and friends. I'm sure you can understand. We have until Dec/Jan until we can bring him home. This earthquake tragedy is making it seem all the longer. Also, I am new to even knowing what a blog is. (the fact that I even figured out how to leave a comment is amazing!) So, I'm not sure if you are able to respond to us personally or not. If so, please feel free to do so at ajkanschmidt@yahoo.com. Also, where should we send the money for the orphanage things to? Can you email your address to us? julia and andy schmidt, indianapolis.
