After consulting with our Nurse who was in charge of Sophie Wei's pain management she ended up bringing in another Pain Management Nurse who was in charge. They suggested we take you outside and see if that helps settle you down.

It worked for the time.

After being inside for two days, Mommy finally feels that it is safe enough to leave the hospital room and get some fresh air.

Day Two in Hospital

Day Two in the Hospital. You were still in a lot of pain and the only thing that seemed to help a bit was holding you in the rocker. We all were still worried about you and no one took showers today because you wanted to be held every minute.

Mommy and Daddy were very scared to hold you with all of the wires connected to you along with your catheter.

First Night in the Hospital

The first night in the hospital was ruff. You hardly slept at all. We had many conversations with two anesthesiologists and the nurses about controlling your pain. We were so scared. The hospital staff was amazing and professional. I could sense that they were a little stumped about how much pain you were in.

We played Singing and Dancing with Mei Mei for you over and over again per your request. It seemed to settle you down a bit.

Auntie Becca was able to arrive just before you went into surgery and then later brought Simone, Uncle Scott, Sara and Emma over after school to visit you. Grandma Prater arrived with us in the morning.

Simone and Auntie Becca brought you a pink kitty. (Also a matching one for Simone.)

Tonight was also the first night that Mommy had ever been away from Simone. It was a big night for Mommy but Simone was fine and went home with Grandma Prater. Here is Simone calling the hospital to check in on you before she went to bed with Grandma Prater.

Day of Surgery

The day of surgery was hard on you. You were in so MUCH pain. Mommy and Daddy were very worried about you. We were also very tiered emotionally and physically.

Right After Surgery

You took a long time in recovery and they had to give you extra oxygen and we had to wait a bit longer to come back and see you. You were not happy when you became alert. It was so hard for us to see you in so much pain.

It was also hard to see other children being wheeled by your bed as they came out of surgery and into the recovery area.

The firs thing that helped settle you down was a Popsicle.

Pre Opperation

One thing that did make you very happy was sitting on Daddy's shoulders. You thought it was funny to cover his head with your gown.

At this point you had to take a drink of some special medicine that made you a little droggy. We were told not to let you walk at this point and the purpose of this medicine was to help with your transition to surgery.

Pre Opperation

The head Surgical Nurse came by and wanted to hold you. It helped ease Mommy's heart and mind knowing that some one so loving was going to be helping take care of you. The Nurse let you play with her little message/pager thing, you loved it. She was such a great Nurse.

This is also the Nurse that took you from Mommy's arms right in front of the Operating Room. She was the one that so gently reminded me not to let you see me so upset as I lost it when I had to hand you to her for the surgery. What strong people they are, really blessed to find their passion and help kids. Mommy will never forget her.

Pre Opperation

After your vitals were checked we were told to undress you and put you in the sugical gown. It brought tears to your eyes and Mommy's too.

Nothing would settle you down. Finally the nurses said we could walk out side of our area and that helped a bit. Your Baby Doll also helped.

When we first checked into the hospital we had to go to the waiting area to get Sophie Wei's vitals checked. This area is called the pre opperation area.

Our first Nurse for the day was great.

Starting To Take Steps

Sophie Wei starts to take a couple of steps today! Sixteen days after cast removal. I could pinch myself. She is trying so hard but her muscles are not fully recovered yet. What a blessing.

Sophie Wei is still having a difficult time sleeping and wakes up crying in the middle of the night, in the morning and at nap time. We try to hold her and comfort her as much a possible to let her know we love her. We also have to make sure she does not hurt her self when she is working through what she is going through. She still says she is in pain.

I feel for her because I know how that being adopted and leaving her only home she knows is enough for anyone to go through. Then on top of that she has this surgery which will help her in the long run but it is hard to see her going through this transition.......All of the reading I have done about adoption, transitions and surgery has helped me understand and prepare but going through it is been hard.

Sophie Wei you are such a sweet little girl who is a fighter. We admire you and you inspire us.

Bubbles and One Night Left

Sophie Wei slept the best she has ever for me. When I went into her room to sleep on Simone's bed I quietly layed down and opened my book, turned on my flashlight and I hear very softley, "Mommy..........MOMMY." I say to her, "Sophie, Mommy's hear time to go to sleep." Then not another peep until 3:30 am!! SIX HOURS of her sleeping and tossing and turning, without needing me to hold her. PROGRESS. From 3:30 on I changed her diaper twice and layed her in bed with me while she slept on my arm. If I moved my arm she fussed so I tried not to move which caused me to have a few kinks but I will do any thing for sleep :O) By 4:45 am she was saying, "GO" to me which means she is finished sleeping so I just get up and go down stairs with her for breakfast and another ELMO DVD.

This is her last night tonight in her SPICA cast. We are all very excited and have been showing her photos from my friend Robbies blog so she can see what will happen tomorrow when the doctor takes her cast off. I know these photos are helping Simone and she can't wait!
These photos are from today. I have been picking up my camera more these last few days, making sure I have plenty of pictures with Sophie Wei in her Spica Cast along with videos.

Our friends Lisa, Ally and Abi brought by some Halloween bubbles, a card and a worm. I let Sophie Wei go for the bubbles, first time since before her cast was on. She loved it and I did not care because today was the last day in the cast!! It also has a very stinky smell to it so maybe this might spruse it up a bit. Thanks for the fun girls.
Oh the worm....Lisa also brought a slimmy, long fake worm for the girls. When Rick pulled into the drive way Simone had her back to him. Just as she saw him coming she held up her worm to show him and he jumped so high because he thought it was a snake!! I felt so bad because I know how he is about snakes but to him it was so real looking and dark and the way it moved as Simone turned around he thought it was a snake. Sorry Daddy.....

Sophie Wei had a blast...What a different girl this afternoon!!

I will NEVER forget this cast and all it stands for! I can not wait for Sophie Wei's next step and pray her body is healing and will continue to heal!

While rolling around in the grass Simone rolled onto the sidewalk and hurt her toe. She wanted me to take a photo of it. Ouch!

I can't wait for tomorrow. I am so excited and nervous at the same time. I know we have a bit to go with recovery but it seems like it will be better than what we have been through already??? I have so many questions for tomorrow.......How did the Acetabulum form, how does the femur head look, how does the plates and screws look in the femur, when do they come out and how, weight baring instructions, skin recovery and back to her club feet recovery (when do we start the brace again. I am so worried that she will regress with this due not having the bar on for so long now and the fact we had to wait a month for it to come in after we came home from China.)......That's just a few of my questions for now. I have to go over our list and get ready for tomorrow. I will try to post tomorrow to let everyone know how it went.

I also can't wait to order our copies of the xrays!

Sponge Bath

I learned how to give Sophie Wei a sponge bath from my friend Robbie....Sophie Wei does not like it too much but that is nothing a big sister and gum can do to help.

It was nice to have my Mom here for two days to help us. It is such a nice feeling to have her hear!!

Six Days LEFT IN SPICA Cast

We are all celebrating that we only have six days left in the Spica Cast!!

We see the light at the end of the tunnel and sleep for us all.

Sophie Wei has been sleeping better the last few nights. She still is up a few times. For example, last night Rick said that she calls out to him, "Daddy" and he replies, "go to sleep" and she does. I just wish it worked for me that way :O)

We both think the antibiotics are helping her a bit so that is a blessing. It is my turn tonight so we will see how it goes.....only 6 more nights with the spica cast on!!!!

Rick and both feel like we are almost "half way there". We are wondering if it will take her the "projected" time for her to start walking and how hard will this next section be??

Sophie Wei we are so proud of you for how far you have come and we pray your body and spirit is healing and can get some solid rest soon. We love you so much.

Simone we are so proud of you for being such a big help these last few weeks and understanding that why Sophie Wei needs us all to help her. You are such a good little "doctor".

Treasures from Friends at School

Over a week ago my friends at the Elementary School where I teach put together two big baskets for us!!! They also gifted us money so we could purchase more poise pads, wet wipes and food. We are extremely grateful for the help and feel so blessed to have so many friends that are helping us through this time. So far we have gone through over 200 Poise Pads and they are so expensive.

There are so many things in baskets to keep us busy while Sophie Wei is in her Spica Cast. We have things that are borrowed so they are labeled so we can return them after we are finished and things that have been gifted to us. WHAT A GREAT IDEA because Sophie Wei's attention span is so short that having new things to look or play with has been great.

Here is a list of some of the things that are in the basket:
Books, movies, puzzles, crafts, stickers, games, manipulative activities, sorting objects, shapes, foam sheets, dvds, books on tapes, stuffed animal, silly jumping dog, phonics books.

They have been a blessing to our family. I LOVE MY FRIENDS!

I was also so blessed to have my friend Andrea M. go to Costco to help us with our shopping. They same day that she came over we had Rachel, Lauren and Jake over in the morning and Rachel even did my dishes for me :O)

After Rachel, Lauren and Jake left and while we were still visiting with
Andrea, Ellie and Easton, Simone had a big melt down/crying fit. She had just reached her melting point and just needed me to hold her for a bit. Sophie Wei left Andrea hold her which she normally does not let many other people hold her so I felt so relieved so I could help Simone. I think I would of just cried if I was home by myself as Simone was in that bad of a mood. I was able to hold Simone for a while and then put a movie in for her. This was good because Simone has not really had the attention that she has needed in the last few weeks so we have been more intentional with making sure she has time with us and have been taking her out for one on one time.

We are so blessed with such good friends!!

Turtle Cookie Bouquet

We received this surprise on our front porch when we came home from our morning walk.....It was a Turtle Cookie Bouquet from Cami and Chris!!!!!!!!!!!

It was so very cute and these photos do not do them justice. What was so nice about this cookie company is they also called us and left a message to make sure we found them on our front porch.

They were so yummy, we polished them off by the second day and the girls loved the idea of the cookies looking so "pretty in the air".

Thanks Cami and Chris, you made our day!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Below is a photo of the jeweled bracelet that Simone made in the hospital. She loves all jewelry but has been wearing this one non stop. She says it reminds her of Sophie Wei's surgery. I am so glad that we went down to the craft/art room and made these! Just another great activity that the hospital does to help people. They have an art program that continues for all children who have been at the hospital. We plan on going back soon for a session. I think it would do us all good to go back and say thanks to the staff and nurses. Hmmmm....maybe we will have to bring some cookies :O)

Spica Car Seat

Here is the car seat that we received on loan from the hospital.

Marathon and a Before the surgery we had read that one of our car seats may of worked. We have a BritaxBritax Regent but due to the position that Sophie Wei she is positioned in her cast we could not use them. We are very thankful for the hospital letting us borrow the car seat as some days it is the only place she will nap.......on the way to dropping Simone off at preschool.

Stroller

This stroller has been a great help for us because we can go for walk or Sophie Wei can sit in here in the house while we try to get things accomplished.

We put a pillow behind her back since she sits at an angle.
This helps make it more comfortable for her.

Today I found a very cool link for Ivy Rose Spica Chairs. If anyone is looking for a table for their child in a spica chair they need to see this site...
I wish we knew about it before Sophie Wei's surgery.

Sophie Wei Sleeps

sophie wei only was up and fussed 3 times last night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Right after Rick put her to bed and after I gave Simone a bath and put her to bed Sophi Wei fussed but I thought Rick was in there so I did not go in. She fussed for about 5 minutes and then stopped, I went down stairs and saw Rick...I told him what happened, we lucked out.

Rick said he changed her diaper around once around 10 and then he held her again at 3:30, That's IT!!!

What a blessing!!!!

It only took two days shy of 4 weeks!!!

Ahh, I guess that I have reached my upload limit for photos through Google/blogger......I have uploaded around 3,500 photos and at my high resolution I guess that is as much as I can upload.

So I added more room which was $$$$ but not back for all of the blogging that I have done over the last few years......I will now have 10x the storage which I will not need but I still need to do blurb books so I can't delete any more photos to make room. I guess i have to wait for 24 hours for it to go through.....I will try back when it goes through or when it is my night off......So see you in two nights....I have some touching photos from surgery that I am finally ready to post.

So if anyone has this problem when uploading that is what is going on.

I received the above email today from my friend Nadine! She found this today on another blog. It could of not came at a better time because this is what I have been struggling with. It also reminds me to continue to pray about what is going great because there are so many things we have to be thankful for. I miss you Nadine and can't wait to see you....this summer??!!!??!

Night Time

Night Time continues to be so very hard. Last night I was up with her all night. I did get in a few "cat" naps for a few minutes here or there but I held her most or walked the room back and forth with her in my arms. I keep thinking to myself, I wish I could say things are getting better but they are not. Just when we say out loud that they are we are reminded of our situation.

Sophie Wei has also been getting bloody noses so we purchased a humidifier to see if that will help. If it continues we will go see our pediatrician just to rule out the ibuprofen that she had been taking for three weeks.

20 Days left.

On a lighter note the girls have made me smile. Yesterday when I was doing the laundry I left the girls on their bedroom floor between their beds and told them I would be right back. I could hear them laughing from the laundry room witch is just down the hall. All of a sudden I hear nothing....I think, hum, what are they doing? I go into their room and I do not see them. I think to myself, where could they go, Sophie Wei can not walk and Simone could not carry her????? Then after a few moments of silence I hear them quietly snickering......It is coming from underneath Simone's Bed!! They were under there against the wall!! I asked Simone how did Sophie Wei make it all the way under there?? Simone said, "moved here". I just laughed, some things you just do not need to know.

These moments...miss them...want them back......

While leaving the house we now take turns on who's turn it is to close the garage door. Sophie Wei closes it and Simone opens it when we return home. Well the other day Simone started to fake cry (yes she does a lot of this lately) and Sophie Wei hands her the garage door opener. Simone closes the door and smiles, Sophie Wei then cries because she just figured out what she did. They truly know what makes each other tick.

Music motivates, inspires and moves me.

Going through my life journey I can think of certain songs that remind me of that time.

So What by Pink = New Attitude = Sophie Wei's recovery (this deserves it's own post at a later date.)

Here is another one of them that has touched me right now during Sophie Wei's recovery, Bring the Rain! I learned about this song from this web site: Bring the Rain. I have been reading for many months now, can't remember exactly when?? I highly recommend it.

My Mom

I just finished updating the blog below and needed to go down stairs to clean up and get many things done.....

So I sign off blogger.

Go down stairs.

What do I find.

Dishes done!

Table cleared, cleaned.

Laundry done.

My Mom is amazing and I love her so.

I am so blessed.

Update

This is how it goes during the day....Sophie Wei does not sit still for long so that means that I have to pick her up and hold her often which is starting to hurt my right arm and wrist. I don't mind but it is so exhausting. I am borrowing a wrist brace from my friend Sue to help my arm and wrist out.

We use a lot of manipulative for fun and go for a lot of walks!! (Thank goodness it still has been nice here.) She does not prefer any type of movies either in English or Chinese so that does not help, I wish is would. She seems to be falling in love with Elmo!! We hope :O)

I just found a cool new craft/toy at Target called Pop Beads by Parents Magazine. Both girls love them although it is a little hard for Sophie Wei to snap them together because her fine motor development skills are about a year behind. I also get a brake when we drive Simone to preschool.

Why this is so hard is because Sophie Wei's attention span is around 5-10 minutes. She is one busy girl who likes to throw any object (I would be surprised if she does not go out for softball, ha-ha.)

Sophie Wei is still not sleeping well at night and it will be three weeks since the surgery tomorrow!!!!

Rick and I have been talking a lot about what might be going on. I also emailed our social worker for help. (Post to come about that.) Granted we did just adopt her three months ago.....We are thinking that part of her terrors, etc. at night is the adjustment from the surgery/cast and the adoption. She wakes up screaming often and it takes a long time for her to settle down. The episodes are coming farther apart though so that is a blessing. My heart goes out to her.

This is still the hardest thing I have ever done. Still doing a lot of praying, thinking, crying and trying to make sure I keep my head up so Sophie Wei does not sense it but some times I don't mind letting her see me cry, etc.

I hope to post photos at some point but no time for that and I wanted to update everyone. Thanks for checking in.

Help From Our Social Worker

Below is the reply from the email that I received from our social worker and my email that I wrote is below that. I thought this would help explain what we are going through and I hope it can help other families. My friend Becca also met a new friend that might have some contact information for us about a local therapist where her children go who are also adopted from China and have similar things "going on" like Sophie Wei. Can't wait to looking into it!

From our social worker who I adore and respect!

"I think she is experiencing the stress of being in new home and also having recent surgery that has traumatized her. She is likely having some nightmares and needs extra assurance. Do not let her "cry it out" she needs to know you are there for assurance. When she wakes up, be there as soon as possible and touch her for comfort. Do not leave her to cry it out when you put her down. That is just interpreted as rejection for a child from an orphanage, and especially one who is experiencing recent medical trauma and change to their bodies. If she has improved, then got worse from surgery, that is likely the latest trauma that has her focus. Crying for that long is a child who is just grieving heavily and does not understand now why she is trapped in a cast.. sleep near her if it helps her, or let her sleep on a mattress in your room. At this point, she needs as much touch and reassurance as possible from the both of you. It will help her move beyond this "stuck" point and attach faster. The extra attention will not interfere with her development, it will actually strengthen her coping skills, and now she needs you more than ever! Remember, at her age, the trauma of adoption and surgery is more pronounced and signficant.We can talk on the phone if needed as well..Zia"

Email from me to our social worker. Subject: Advice

"Just checking in with you to see if you have any advice about Sophie Wei. When she wakes up she cries and is very upset. For example, today she was fighting a nap. Fell asleep in my arms for maybe fifteen minutes. Awoke crying. I tried to settle her back in by rocking, carrying her, etc. Finally I came down stairs to put a movie in and she fell asleep while I was fixing the DVD player. She was asleep for maybe twenty minutes. Awoke crying and then never stopped for 50 minutes. She was hysterical. FYI - She has done this in the past but not enough to warrant some help. She has done this a lot lately. She just had her surgery on Sept. 10th. She is in a full spica cast (just below nipples, all the way down the right leg and to the knee on the other leg.) Adjustment At Home

Coming home is a blessing but hard all over again. Sophie Wei wants to slide on out of our laps and go play. She is even saying, "walk." It is an adjustment and we are trying to figure out how to work things at home.

My Mother In Law Maureen and Nephew Brandon came up to visit and help on Sunday. That was nice and Simone stuck to Brandon like glue, she adores him.

Today Becca and Sara came over to help and my Mom arrived this evening for two days to help us figure this out.

Sophie Wei is doing well with her medicine. Her speech has regressed and she does a lot of whining, etc. but that is to be expected. She is also having some anxiety when ever Rick or I leave the room.

Rick brought out our baby stroller that we had for Simone and that works well for Sophie Wei to sit in and we are able to put the safety belts around her. We also do a lot of carrying her around and making sure her foot is elevated, etc.

This is very hard, I do a lot of crying.........Well all of the girls in our house are......We are thankful though because this too shall pass in time. It just does not seem like it right now.

We see our surgeon on Friday morning for a check up. We pray that Sophie Wei is healing well. One of the nurses told us that she because she had her bones worked on it takes a little longer for recovery.

I better get some sleep while I can. Sorry there will not be many updates right as of now because we are so busy taking care of our little ones. Sorry this update is so late but that is because I have had no time to do so. We did not mean to worry anyone.

Once again thank you everyone for your emails and prayers. Sorry I have not responded to them all but I am sure you understand.

One thing I know for sure is that this experience has changed me in more ways then one, for the better........that will be another post some day.

We Are Home

We Are Home as of this afternoon!

I was told by the nurse at 5 am this morning that Sophie Wei needed to go to the bathroom and if she did not they would have to give her fluids through her IV again and put her catheter back on. This is standard that after you have the catheter taken out you need to go to the bathroom with with in six hours or so. I told him that she does not normally pee at night and I was hoping she would. Luckily we were given twenty extra minutes and she did!!!!!!! FEWWWW.

We feel blessed that we are going home together as a family.

Day Three Surgery Update

I really should NOT be posting because I need the sleep. I think after I posted last night we only had an hour and a half more of sleep???? The Nurse just came in to check vitals and I said, oh, awe....She said, you can tell me you don't want me to. I said really, well then please don't do it now because she needs to sleep and just explained what we just went through with the new iv having to be put in by the Panda Team.

I am back. Sophie Wei was just fussing again so this will be very short.

We have had some good times and ruff times today.

I will update this post later to give more details.

Her epidural was taken out this evening, spica cast had to be cut and put pack together to get it out. She FREAKED out, started to revert to the first day/night/morning behavior that made me start to remember it and I cried, had to sk the nurse to get another nurse to help becuase I had to leave the room. SOphie Wei's doctors were here to do that. Her doctor could not get the epidural out and did not want to pull it so they had to get the saw to open it and then repair it. THEY ARE AMAZING and so caring.....A blessing to us all. The nurses and support staff are amazing as well. What a great team here.

Then this evening around ten when it was time for the meds through the IV we learned that it had many kinks in it and could not be saved. It was saved once today and another time already. So our RN, Jason, called in the Panda Team. Michelle and Josh from the panda team were wearing Red shirts with Pandas on them and black pants. Our other RN, Beth, said that they are so amazing. They sit here at the hospital and when needed go pick up critical babies and children when called. they leave by helicopter or ambulance. Since Sophie Weis arms are both "done" they had to use her left leg. The IV has been in her right but the left is bruised from surgery.

The Panda Team was amazing!!!! They even gave Sophie Wei a panda!! They used small warm pads to help her veins appear. What a blessing but it was tuff on "Sophie Wei.

Simone is here tonight. Wanted to be with us so she is. Scoot, Becca, Sara, Emma, Jeni and Reagan came to visit us tonight so that was nice and a blessing.

No time for spell check again. I need my sleep, even if it is for ten minutes or an hour.

There is a slight chance we will go home tomorrow evening but if we have another night again like last night or the others we WILL NOT be going home until every thing is manageable.

Today we made very special bracelets. I will cherish them forever. Simone had to finish mine because Sophie Wei needed out of the art room and put a very special blue bead on the end for me along with Becca's help.

I am praying that Robbi's advice will come true tomorrow and tomorrow will be the day. The best one yet :O) So I will pray.

I also want to pray for all of the other children and families here. We could have it much harder than what it is. One Mom told me today that she has been coming her since her son was two weeks old and he is now a teenager. He has been riding his wheel chair around here since we have been here. Today he was coming full steam ahead and one of the doctors got down like a football linemen. The young boy said, "I WILL RUN YOU OVER!" And kept on going, the doctor safely got out of the way and smiled. So did we as the boy peels away down the hall continuing on his mission.

Quick Update

Sophie went to sleep around 8:30.

It has been a much, Much better afternoon.

We went to sleep at 9:15 after she had falling into a deeper sleep, waiting just to make sure she was ok.

Rick woke up with her around eleven. Vital check around midnight, Sophie Wei still up.

I take over at 1am so Rick can sleep a little, Sophie Wei still awake. I have been here with her watching Singing and Dancing with Mei Mei....over and over again but that is fine with me because she is sleeping. It is now 4 am. I went out to get some hot tea around thirty minutes ago and the nurse asked about her and I told her she was still awake. She came in to give her some strong teylenol and the other nurse checked her vitals again. She has been fussing, around a three on a scale of ten. Yesterday, last night and this morning was around a 100 on a scale of 10....I did just almost ask them to push the button for the extra meds but she just went back to sleep....Oh, I hope she can sleep, she needs it so much!!!!!!

There is talk of possible going home on Saturday? Her Doctor came by this afternoon and said he will take her epidural out tomorrow some time because someone else said it would be hard and they might need to split the cast to do it. He said that he will take care of it so that was comforting.

The truth is this has been the hardest thing in my life. Robbie has assured me that it will get better. This is just my opinion but if I could help any other family that is going to go through this same thing is just to hang in there and pray.

Having our daughter that we love so much bite, hit, pintch, scratch, scream even though her voice is gone and watch little eyes look at us saying please help me is so painful. It is so hard to even write about. Watching her itch her self like crazy made is hard too. Especially with her right hand that has her iv going into it. She does have engough room to suck her favorite fingers though! The itching is a side affect from the meds.

We have been meeting so many wonderful families here and learning about their stories. Each one is unique and special. Looking into other families eyes there becomes this unspeakable bond, understanding and love for a stranger that I never have known before. Rickey left today as he bounced back from his surgery fast and his Mom Katie came over to give me her contact information and I can't wait to catch up after all of this is over.

I need to get to sleep now. It has been almost fifteen minutes. I think I am safe to get a little bit more sleep.

We are starting to also get more confident in moving Sophie Wei. Both Rick and I are more affraid of messing up all of the wires that are attached to her, still.

Please pray that her bone graft continues to stay connected, hip stays in place and her femur grows together with out problems and that the plate does not bother her.

We received this email from our friend Sue and it brought tears to my eyes as they all do when we read the emails or comments. Thank you all so very much. We will be saving them for Sophie Wei to read when she is older so she knows how much she is loved. For my new blogger friends that have posted for the first time, thank you too and can't wait to read your blogs when Sophie Wei is doing much better.

I miss our little Simone. She has been such a big trooper through all of this. My heart aches as I look at her confused face and then at the same time see her playing happily in the outside play court yard. We are so thankful that our girls have each other. Simone has been so good and so flexible, more than we could ask for.
No time for spell check, I need my sleep. Once again thank you everyone. The love and prayers are felt......It has been twenty one minutes of sleep for Sophie Wei so I think I am in the clear to go to bed. better take time for it what the opportunity arises.

Turning the Corner?

We may be turning a corner.

We were at a loss because Sophie Wei is maxed out with her meds. but there are other options now that it has been 24 hours past surgery and other meds/drugs will not interfere with bone growth now.

Around one they put me in a wheel chair, Sophie Wei on me, brought the IV/Med. Cart and went for a walk. I think my Mom or Becca had to hold that thing.....it seems to be keeping her busy and Has HELPED.

This is so hard.

Occupational therapist came in this afternoon and taught us many things like diapering, picking up, car seat. We have a Britax Marathon and Britax Redgant and that would work possible put because Sophie Wei is in a more laying down position we will borrow the Spica Car Seat from the hospital. We will sign papers promissing that we will return it....No problem there :O)

Things are looking up.. Sophie is smiling, talking and telling us what to do.

Trusting in God. Being together as a family helps.

Simone stayed with my Mom at our house last night and they took care of our dog for us. Tonight Simone with go to Scott and Beccas, My Mom will go to our house, take care of Lew for us and then leave very early in the morning so she can get up and drive back to the beach by the time her works starts at 7:15.

Need to go, Sophie Wei needs us. Just wanted to give an update and say thank you for praying.

Pain

We had a ruff night last night. The hardest night ever. This will be quick. This is my first time out of the room. SOphie Wei is resting on Rick for the first time and fell asleep.

They had a ruff time getting Sophie Wei's pain under control after the surgery along with we are pretty sure that she was upset about the cast, every thing.

I think everyone was stumped and I could tell they were concerned.

Lots of tears.

Lots of deep breaths.

Lots of prayers.

lots of frustration

We, along with the pain specialist and anesthesiologist decided to wait and not push the pain med. button until she fusses. Which is hard because of yesterday and last night. When we waited too long it got out of control. BY doing this they will be able to reevaluate, adjust, etc.

Everyone here is professional, caring and amazing. We are in such a great hospital.

Simone is outside playing with my Mom. Becca helping Rick. Sara Anne just pushed some buttons on the other computer and it is beeping. I should probably go tell someone. Oo's.

Just did asking for prayers for us to get SOphie Wei's pain under control.

They did cut her femur and have a plate to hold it together. The bone graff on the pelvis area looks good. Hip in place

Sophie Wei is in Surgery

We have been here at Dornbeckers since around 7:10 am. Rick, Sophie Wei, My Mom and I arrived. Sophie Wei bonked her head on the ceramic floor after trying to fall down on her folded blanket for fun. She now has a big shiner on her forehead.

Simone went to Rachel and Brian's house to be with Holt. Rachel then took her to preschool. She was such a good, sweet girl when we brought her to their house. I was ready for her to fuss and cry but she was excited to be there which made it easier. On the way to their house Simone said, "This is a Great Story. I love Julia (Julia is a friend from preschool who also is adopted from China.)"

Becca arrived just before Sophie Wei went in and shortly after she had her sip of comfort medicine. Becca will be going to pick Simone up from preschool when Sophie Wei is ready.

Everyone here is WONDERFUL! When the surgical nurse started to explain how we would be able to walk her to the Surgery Room I started to cry and worked so hard to stop by taking deep breaths because I did not want to upset Sophie Wei. I also was pushing on my eyes, by doing so I messed up my right contact. So when the Medical Student Resident came in he probably was thinking and wondering what I was doing to my eye. The Surgery Nurse Danielle was holding Sophie We as she visited with us.

Sophie Wei started to scream and cry as they walked her away. The nurse reminds me nicely to not let her seem me upset because it will make it worse for her.

We visited with two families. They are so kind and friendly. One is here for their 4 year old son to have his cleft palate fixed, hopefully for the last time and the other has a sweet little girl who is 2 that is allergic to food, eats by a feeding tub and is having more testing done (they just left and the Mom was crying as she is walking out. I just want to go and give her a BIG HUG!!!)

Sophie Wei went in around 10:15 am. We received a phone call update from the Surgical Nurse at Noon that they started the surgery part around twenty minutes ago. She is doing ok. I might post more later tonight?

Please Pray for Sophie Wei's Surgery Tomorrow

Tomorrow is Sophie Wei's surgery.
Please pray for her, anesthesiologist and her doctors.

We will arrive around 7 am. Surgery is scheduled to start at 9am but there is an older little boy that needs to go first due to an stress fracture protrusion and the doctor has another surgery later(hope I got that right, praying for him too.)This afternoon we put pre-wrap on Simone and Sophie Wei's dollies.
(I found this idea from Bobbies blog.) It was good because it brought up a lot of good conversation. Sophie Wei kept saying "O" after I would tell her very simple words about her surgery and cast.

Tonight while talking to the anesthesiologist I had to take deep breaths and write down my notes so I could remember every thing to tell Rick. He had to be at school tonight for an open house. I am so glad that my Mom is here because I had the girls in the bath so she took over.

I feel such at peace with how things are going. The anesthesiologist was so easy to talk to. She did do most of the talking tonight but I did ask a few questions. She did her research and looked at all of Sophie Wei's medical information before she called. She took her time with me and was very sensitive. She was in no hurry to get off of the phone. When she told me about when it is time for Sophie Wei to go into surgery they can take her from the prep-room and roll her bed down or I could walk her down the hallway to the doors and kiss her good by? I just started crying as I visualized that in my head and then I thought to my self pull it together because there is more to talk about.

Sophie Wei you are such a sweet, silly, fun, lovable,
resilient little girl and we love you very much.
We are so blessed to be your Mommy and Daddy.
Every day with you is a blessing.

The Ache In Your Heart

"The ache in your heart is the ache of a mother. Powerlessness when we cant just make the problem go away with a snap. The journey you are experiencing is STRESSFUL for sure, but you are going through it with your daughter. I am so grateful she has your arms to hold her as she goes through this healing process, and look forward to the say it is a story in the past as we all watch her run through fields and kick soccer balls like nobody's business (her mama is a pe teacher after all! :0).

Hip Baby Yahoo Group

I have been thankful to find a very supportive Hip Baby Yahoo Group. I have learned a wealth of knowledge from these parents and people who have been through hip issues. Through this group I am able to receive emails of support, ideas and information. They even have tons of files that I have been able to read through and gain information from. I have also been able to see many photos of children in a Spica cast so that helps makes it more familiar and not so scary.

After recieving many emails today I sent this email out to everyone in the group:
"thanks again everyone for sharing... I am reading these posts with tears as we wait and anticipate Sophie Wei's surgery on wed. This does help reading this. I appreciate you all!"

This is an email I received from Bobi in reply to the above email that really touched my heart and brough lots of tears. I need to keep it:
"For me the time up to surgery was BY FAR the worst part for me. I was sick to my stomach, tearful and felt anguish inside- I couldn't imagine all this happening to my sweet daughter, let alone after waiting so long to finally get her home! There have been tough moment, just like life in general, but it has NOT been anywhere as bad as I had feared. I worried about diapering, holding her, picking her up etc. I can say all that is easier than I had thought. Not that my body doesn't hurt from picking her up and holding her and caring her, but it is doable.

My approach has been like another mommy mentioned about how she helps her child during this: love, attention, affection, holding, playing, and time together! Boy am I glad you all cant' see how goofy I am with her, and how much I enjoy it and adore her humor, fun and creativity! I do believe there are blessings that have come out of this hip journey, and I would not have imagined that before the start of everything.

I felt like she/we'd be missing out on so much, but I have found ways to do nearly everything and we've found things that i would not have had she not been in the Spica. I am sill amazed and in awe of how this hip journey has not had a negative affect on my daughters personality, lovingness or disposition- not that there are not moments (like there would be if she wasn't in the Spica) but I must say the hip journey is survivable, doable, and Gracie is still thriving, not just surviving, while in the Spica.

We're 10 weeks into a 6 1/2 month Spica time frame and today I can say though I don't like it for her, or for us, I know that we can make it and I believe this is in her best interest and we do this out of love. I can't wait to tell her all about how amazing she is during this, along with so much more I can't wait to tell her all about!

Sending warmest thoughts and prayers for things to go the very best they can as you prepare for surgery Wed! Please know that any questions you have, concerns or frustrations are always welcome here- there are so many who have helped me so much when I needed them- I can't imagine this without everyone here!

Last night Sophie Wei had been fussing uncontrollably so many times through out the night that we both agreed to take her dennis brown bar off!! We both felt that we all need to have sleep before the surgery and there has been too many days in a row with her having a ruff time at night. This is the first time we decided to do this since we have had it but her surgery is getting so close that we want her to be rested.

After we took it off she went to sleep and so far tonight she is doing good.

Pre Opperation Appointment Today

We met with Sophie Wei's surgeon today and it went very well.

He told us the surgery will last about three to four hours and she will be in the hospital for two to three days. Because of her spinal epidural it will take more time, this will help control her pain.

He said that she needs to be picked up and brought every where like a princess that she is :O) We laughed and said we already do. He does not want her crawling or standing although she will not be able to stand in her cast anyways.

He told us of some things that will happen after words that can be a little scary like her right thigh swelling, etc. He said it is better to know about these things a head of time.

He told us that a wagon or umbrella stroller works well for moving her around during the day. We have an umbrella stroller and the Watson's have loaned us their wagon.

I have found some good advice on another persons blog....Wish I could remember where??? Anyways they said that they put pre-wrap on their child's doll so they could see what would be happening to them.. What a great idea to role play!

He said that the most hardware she will have is a plate on her femur and that would have to be taken out a year later. No pins. They are still going to wait and make that decision if they are going to cut her femur to repair her pelvis during the surgery. If it looks like there might be a chance that it can repair itself after having the hip put back into place then they will wait and watch her closely. If they do wait to fix her pelvis and it does not grow back then she will for sure have to have the femur cut to fix the pelvis when she turns five.

He said some parents are better at keeping the cast area clean than others. He said I could use duct tape to help around the potty area.

After her cast is taken off she will not be able to walk for three to four weeks. He also said that she will have a limp for about six months.

There will be another surgeon assisting him, it is his partner. There will also be an intern there watching but will not be doing any of the work.

We will be at Dornbeckers Childrens Hospital.

We will be going back often for check ups and after the spica cast is off we will see him every few months.

I am not sleeping at all. I am trying not to worry but I can't stop. We are trying to keep her legs and knees free of ouches and keep her healthy and happy.

Dennis Brown Bar Brace for Club Feet

Here are some photos of Sophie Wei in her Dennis Brown Bar Brace. She will be wearing this brace at night time for two to four more years. This continues her therapy for her club feet.

Sophie Wei is doing pretty good with wearing it at night. She happily puts them on and moves around while we ready stories before bed. We can hear her bar hitting the crib through out the night but as of now it does not seem to make her fuss that much any more, only when she is not feeling well or very tiered.

Selfishly it is hard to snuggle with he while it is on but we have figured out how to do it side ways and the bar hurts my legs while she is moving around BUT we will do any thing to make sure she is receiving the care she needs to help her feet........

Since Sophie Wei wore this for so many hours (5pm until she awoke in the moring) while living in Chengdu, she is an old pro.

I bet she will be able to snow board :O)

Sophie Wei's Baby Shower

Here Rick, Simone and I at Sophie Wei's baby shower. (This shower was on Wed. May 28th, 2008. Due to how fast every thing went I was not able to post these photos or write about it until now or finish my way over due thank you notes until now...... This post is long over due, I just wanted to take the time to write down our memories from this day.)

Today was such a sad day and a great day. The reason why it was so sad was because we were told that our Adoption for Sophie Wei was on hold. It was pretty ruff to swallow because we were just getting ready to purchase our tickets and were only waiting for our Travel Approval to come in which should be here any day.

Actually today I felt like, was this adoption ever going to happen?!!?

Today was a great day because we were able to be with our friends and celebrate Sophie Wei! Our friends have been a big part of our journey, supporting us and always asking us how things have been going.

We are so thankful to have such great friends.

Today I had Sue, Jeni and Jessica C. asking me if I was sure we still wanted to have the shower today since we were put on hold and were pretty sad about it. They all went to great efforts to come check on me even though I was away all morning on a field trip with my fifth grade PE classes for their fifth grade all district track meet. Both Rick and I felt that we wanted it to continue so we could just be with friends as we felt that is what we really needed....In our heart of hearts we also felt like we wanted to celebrate Sophie Wei's upcoming adoption too and believe that the adoption would still take place.

Here are my friends that hosted the shower for us. From Left: Jessica C., Alona (and Alan who is not photoed), Me and Sue. The girls organized it. Also Alona and Alan opened up their beautiful home for us to have the shower there. Many other teacher friends that brought yummy food and desserts. Our friend Janet made our FAVORITE desserts which I thought was a very sweet idea.

Here are the yummy desserts that Janet made for us all. One of my favorites is Cheescake and Chocolate. Rick also likes Chocolate and Cheesecake but his favorite is pinapple and coconut which Janet also made and there is a picture below of that one. Janet is an amazing baker and cook!!!

My friends Sherry and Jessica worked on these very cool favors. My flash was too bright so you can not see the monogram on the cute tag but it was SO ADORABLE and the chocolates are one of my favorites!!

Ally's 4th BIRTHDAY

We had a good time celebrating Ally's 4th Birthday at her Party at Chucky Cheeses. It was Sophie Wei's first time there and Simone talked it up all the way there.

The Good and The Bad

The Good.

Today Sophie Wei said to me for the first time, "I LOVE YOU MOMMY!" Yes, those three words, all by her self when I was dressing her in her bathroom this morning. I will never forget it. Rick told me today that while I was at work she yelled at him and said, "I LOVE YOU DADDY". Ah, sweet moments.

The Bad.

Sophie Wei smashed her fingers in the door to our walk in closet. It was one of those things that just happened, a bad accident! Rick was standing right there but it happened too fast.

She smashed her two favorite fingers that she sucks on. So going down for her nap was sad. She kept saying, "OW, OWWWW!" It was even harder at night to put her to bed. It took me an hour and a half. We feel so bad and it is hard to see her hurting so much!!! She tried to suck on her other fingers but they did not work for her.....She still prefers those fingers even though the band aids are on there.

This afternoon Rick, Simone and Sophie Wei went over to the Watson's to return a ladder and visit for a bit.

They shaved their dog Trueman. Simone said, "what happened to Trueman."

Today marks the day that we had to formally start getting every thing in line for Sophie Wei's surgery and our leave from work.

Today we feel blessed for many things.

One is that we have enough sick leave between Rick and myself that we will be able to stay home and take care of Sophie Wei during and after her surgery until she is healthy. We will find out in three weeks if she will have two surgery's at the same time or just her one (hip and/or club foot flextion surgery) and more answers to all of our questions.

Today Judy who is in charge of payroll spent much time with me explaining how financial things work during sick leave and leave with out pay. I can not be happier with how sweet she was with me and so willing to answer all of my questions. I am so glad that she was so clear because I had misunderstood some things. We are trying to cover all of our different scenarios of what is going to happen after the surgery and reality is that we need to have income to pay our bills, eat and run our house hold. What I want is much different than what reality is. Honestly I would love to take the rest of the year off and be home with Sophie Wei but that is not highly possible for us. At some point, sooner than later, we want to be out of debt and we need to make good decisions for our family.

That Rachel W. was so honest with sharing her advice on long term leave, etc. It is nice to talk to others who have been through it.

The last thing I did was talk to Kaiser, our insurance company about how much the surgery would cost? I started crying when she said that it would be covered fully and would not cost us a dime, not even a co-pay! I even had to ask her two more times to make sure that was correct because I could not believe it. She said we would have to pay 20% for a wheel chair rental, etc. but that should not be too bad. After having some deep things to think about today in regards to financial things it really was a blessing.

Then we also found out that Sophie Wei was approved to be tested in the school district where we work. We are having her tested for the basics, motor development, cognitive, hearing, speech, etc. There was a new law that went into affect two months ago that all preschool children of school district employees that have special needs can have a boundary exception. That was a blessing. We are not for what Sophie Wei will qualify but it will be good to know where she is at since we do not know for sure what they meant by her being developmentally delayed.

So things are moving along. Rick and I have been trying to spend some time at school getting ready for the new year. One of us will go to work then the other. Sophie Wei and Simone have been adjusting to that as well and it shows up the most at bed time and during their sleep. Not sleeping well and being fussy when going to sleep. So hopefully in a few days this small transition will pass and they will be back to normal.

She has been saying two word sentences but this three word one came out today, so cute and we are so proud of her!

Sophie has not been sleeping well at all since she has been wearing her Dennis Brown Bar at night. Since it has been happening so frequently it has to be the bar!??

On the third night of wearing the bar Brandon and I went to Target. Rick called me to tell me she was crying so hard that she was hyperventilating so he took it off. I think that was the first time she has cried like that. Good idea to take it off, we can ease into this. It just makes me think, does it reminder her of her home in China at the Orphanage, does it hurt?

We have been on vacation for most about 8 days and maybe that has some thing to do with it but when she does not sleep neither do we.

We tell her that she needs to wear it and it will help her walk, run, hop, skip, etc. but not sure how much she understands??!?

It is just braking my heart!!

Dennis Brown Bar and Shoes are In

Today we picked up Sophie Wei's Dennis Brown Bar and Shoes. This system will help continue with her club feet therapy.

We feel so blessed that we only had to pay a small portion for them although we would any thing to help her it sure does help.

My memory card reader is broken so I will post photos of it later. Like Rick said, "she will be wearing it for two or four years so we have plenty of time to take pictures later."

Even though Sophie Wei was slightly asleep when we put them on her she did not mind at all! She must remember it from China??!

I also finally emailed Sophie Wei's Surgeon and asked the correct spelling of name of the third procedure that they are going to do...it is called Pemberton Osteotomy.

Certification Of Citizenship Arrives

Ever since I saw my blogger friend Sharon post about her daughters Certification of Citizenship coming in the mail I have been checking for Sophie Wei's every day since then knowing that ours should not be too far behind since we are a few weeks behind their time line........I am sure the mail person has been very happy with us since I have been checking the mail EVERYDAY waiting for it!! Not that I ever thought it was not coming but because there is nothing like seeing the document and having it in our hands and it means so much for Sophie Wei.

Good news, today Sophie Wei received her Certification Of Citizenship and letter from the White House in the mail today.

Here is what the letter said, same as Simone's. Special day for us!!

"Dear Fellow American,

I am pleased to congratulate you on becoming a United States citizen. You are now a part of a great and blessed nation. I know your family and friends are proud of you on this special day.

Americans are united across the generations by grand and enduring ideals. The grandest of these ideals is an unfolding promise that everyone belongs, that everyone deserves a chance, and that no insignificant person was ever born. Visit from Cam and Chris

This evening we had the pleasure of spending it with our good friends Cami and Chris! They came up to visit and meet Sophie Wei! We had such a fun evening catching up.

We missed Sophie Wei's scheduled nap due to Simone's gymnastics lesson and therefore the rest of the day she was so grumpy so it was nice to end the day on a high.

We received this Willow Tree gift set from our friends Bill and Nadine and the Girls. It is called "Sisters By Heart".

I loved what Nadine wrote in her card to us:
"A friend on her blog compared adoption to a mobile-"
"Picture a mobile, floating effortlessly. Now wrap one side and watch it careen out of balance. Over time, the motion slows and regains balance....it would be the same for our family."

Then Nadine also writes: "You sent your mobile spinning with the addition of Simone, but everyone found their place. Now it's spinning again, but soon it will settle back to balance, better than ever!!"

Very well put. I could of not described it better myself. When I called Nadine to thank her for the gift we had such a great talk about transitions, adjustments, following your gut and just knowing what your child needs and listening to that. It is so comforting to have someone who has/is going through some of the same issues as we are. I so appreciate her friendship, advice and wisdom.

We also received this one from John and Cheryl Laxson when we arrived home with Simone called "New Life."

My Mother in Law also gave me this one with the word "Hope" attached to it, which is one of Simone's middle names.

We are so thankful for their friendship and so happy to have them in ourlives.

We love you guys!!!

Special Gifts

When we arrived home from China a package awaited us on the counter! When I looked I noticed it was for Sophie Wei and Simone. It was from Denise and Maggie!

I met Denise through her blog and she is the mother to five adorable children. Here daughter Maggie is from the same Orphanage as Sophie Wei in Chengdu!! She answered a lot of questions about Chengdu, etc. She also gave us one photo of Sophie Wei that she received from her disposable camera that she sent to the Orphanage.

I also followed her while she was in Chengdu and Guangzhou. It was so neat to see photos of the places they went while in Chengdu knowing that we would be there soon.

I also enjoyed reading her posts about Why Special Needs. Part One and Part Two. If anyone is reading this and is considering and have not made up your mind you need to read this! Reading about their blessing will bring tears to your eyes.

Thanks Denise for thinking of our girls. You are so thoughtful!!!!!!! God Bless YOU and Your Family!!

Brace and Shoes Ordered

Today we went to have Sophie Wei fitted for her Dennis Brown Bar and Shoes. This will help continue with her club feet therapy that she has already started in China.

While in Chengdu she wore the brace from 5pm until she awoke in the morning, around 12-14 hours we were told by the physical therapist at her orphanage.

Sophie Wei was amazing with the Doctor and all smiles. Simone was so well behaved. Things are moving along nicely.

The brace and shoes will arrive in six days.

Cousin Brandon and Grandma Jones

Sophie Wei meets her one of her big Cousins, Brandon, for the first time today. We also had a nice visit with my Mother In Law, Grandma Jones.
Sophie was treating Brandon just like her Babba. She was playing ruff with him, it was so funny.

Fourth of July

We started our day with a slow morning and then lunch at a local park with our friends Lisa, Craig, Ally and Abi. We had such a great time.

When we first arrived at the park the Undercover Area was filled with a large group of people. When I first saw them my heart sunk because I was thinking that we were not going to have as much fun with this large group there too. But we did and they were nice. The children from that group also had very good manners and were friendly.

It lightly rained off and on but then cleared up with a sunny sky.

I am so thankful for Lisa because she brought her camera and I forgot mine. Thanks Lisa for these photos above.

Later that afternoon we played around the house and in the front yard. Here is Sophie Wei below running away from me as I sit on the front porch. I was trying to get photos of her and she thought it was funny to run away.

Simone enjoyed playing with the sidewalk chalk. Happy First Fourth of July Sophie Wei!!!

We forgot to turn up our time on the sprinklers when it started getting really hot outside so part of our yard was burnt. This happens because there is not a lot of top soil in the front. Rick was trying to save other parts of it withe the hand sprinkler and also turned up the time on the sprinkler system, we hope that helps. We hope to some day redo the front yard and landscape/widen the driveway on one side but that will be a while.

This is what the girls like to do when Rick goes into the bathroom. It cracks me up and I had to get photos of it. They knock on the door and put their fingers underneath the door.

New Big Sister Gift and Visitors Today

Today we had visitors from Kris, Alyssa and Jessica P. Then Tia and Drew stopped by and brought Sophie Wei a very cute American Bathing Suit from the Gymboree!! Then Hannah and Tami brought by a new big sister gift for Simone but she was taking a nap. Since the girls were napping and Hannah had not yet been able to meet Sophie I had her go up to there room so I could take a picture of her by them. Here Hannah is below holding up Simone's new big sister gift, a PANDA GYMNASTICS OUTFIT!!!!! She is going to be one happy little girl when she sees it.

The girls slept through the photos. Emily F. do you remember this pillow case that Sophie Wei is sleeping on?? I purchased it from your Aunt TT at her garage sale years ago. I think it use to be yours??? :O)

This overall outfit is the same outfit that Jessica purchased for Simone when she first came home from China. I could not find the matching light pink shirt that goes with it but it is such a neat feeling to see Sophie Wei in the same outfits that Simone had.

Simone was SO HAPPY to receive her new big sister gift!! You can see by the smile on her face. Sophie Wei was happy just to watch her big sister. She is now getting closer to saying Simone, it sounds like Smone.

Simone was also enjoying the fact that this outfit came with a new hair pretty!! She loved this outfit so much that she had it on all afternoon. She was so sad when I asked her to take it off for dinner. I had to explain to her that we do not want to get food on it. Then Simone asked me if she could wear it all day tomorrow..........
You can see in the above photo the two bracelets that Kris, Alyssa and Jessica P. brought over for the girls today. One says has a charm that says big sister and the other one says little sister. Simone loves them and I am sure Sophie Wei does too. They are adorable and Simone wanted to wear them both which was OK because I need to make Sophie Wei's a little bit smaller. Thanks Jessica and Kris they are a hit with the girls and we also enjoyed our time together today.

Surgery Date

We received a nice surprise today. We received the phone call to schedule Sophie Wei's Surgery and Pre-Operation Appointment. We were thinking that we would be waiting a week or two so this was nice.

Her surgery will be on Wednesday September 10th, 2008.

Her Pre-Operation surgery will be Friday August 29th, 2008.

We were a little bummed that they could not due it in August since we both have the time off from work and now we both have to use sick days, etc. but I am sure there is a good reason for this to all be working out this way. They told us this was the first available time.

Today another version of Sophie Wei's story was on CNN International. Since we do not have that channel or do any of our friends and family my friend A. will be sending us a copy of the longer version. Not sure if this is it but I just found it on their web site???

We are SO blessed for Sophie Wei to have this and for her friends Kyung, S. M. and A. We can't wait for some day to get you all together again.

Hettinger Girls

Hettinger Girls stopped by for a visit, brought us a yummy pot roast for dinner and our girls adore THEM!!

The are have a blast on their vacation in Florida and I miss them! Today is Nixon's birthday. She called me to tell me she just ran into Hulk Hogan and his daughter Brooke going into Chili's Restaurant. WOW! Every time they are down their they see someone famous.

When I took this photo Rick said, "look Sophie is almost as big as Reagan!" It was funny because both Sophie Wei and Reagan are small. They look so cute together.

After they left we gave the girls a bath. Sophie Wei has been soooooo good for bath time because Simone is not a fan of water while Sophie Wei loves to splash!!! Due to all of Simone's ear problems she is very protective of her ears and still when she gets her ears under water she gets clogged up. Sophie Wei has helped Simone not be so afraid. Simone now lets us wash her hair and then use the sprayer to rinse!!!! So much easier than the way we have been doing it. Needless to say bath time is easier now a days.

Simone's hair is changing. We just had Janet trim it before we left for China and it is getting a little fuller.

Sophie Wei's hair is thick and their is a lot of it, just like mine. Her hair also likes to go forward towards the face.

One decided to do their top this way and then the other one had to copy!! Go figure.
I know this photo below is washed out but I love it because her is Sophie Wei again with her personality while she is running.
I love our life!! What a blessing each day is!

Tenative Medical Plan

(This photo was taken on our last day in China, June 19th. After things settle down I will finish posting about our trip and you will see more of these photos. I thought these two photos were fitting for this post.)

Today we met with Sophie Wei's Pediatric Orthapetic Surgeon and his Intern who is studying under him. We felt so comfortable with both of them!! What a blessing. My friend Melissa has been sharing with me about how important it is that you feel comfortable with your child's doctor so we are blessed that things went well today and maybe Rick and I can get some sleep! I went to bed at two am last night and not sure when I finally drifted off to sleep. Rick also has not been sleeping.

Simone got to stay with her Auntie Rachel today. She enjoyed playing with Lauren and Jake. Then Tammy (my friend from college) came over with her daughters Grace and new born baby girl Mei. Simone had a blast with them all and was smiling on the way home.

The doctors spent around 1.5 hours with us and we felt NO RUSH! The hardest part was the traffic on the way home, it took us an hour to reach Rachel's when it should be around 25 minutes - 30 minutes.

Things went well from the start. Traffic was light, we walked right in, checked in, paid the co-pay and then they came out to call us in. Went in talked with the Nurse and met the Doctors real quick. Then we were sent down to take an x-ray.

As the x-ray machine started to move in the quite room, I hear, click click grrr. I duck my head and the sound of it moving started to make my tummy sick and I was doing every thing to hold back my tears as Sophie Wei's eyes start to tear up as she reached both hands out to me so I could pick her up but could not. She then assumed her position, sucking on her two fingers.

When when we arrived back in the Doctors exam room and while looking at the x-ray that they had just taken of Sophie the doctor starts to explain what is going on.

Sophie Wei has a hip dislocation, also known as Hip Dysplasia. Here is one good web site I found with great information and here is another.

She will have done:
1. Open reduction (bikini line opening),
2. Femur reduction (cutting the femur bone and attaching it to the pelvis to help repair the flat shelf) and
3. Pemberton Osteotomy

I start crying as soon as he started talking about cutting the femur bone on her right leg and using that to repair the shelf lip fold on her pelvis. One of the doctors hands me a tissue and then she handed the box to Rick. Then I needed to sit down, put Sophie Wei in my lap and then she reminds me that she wants her own spot on the chair in between Rick and I. He continues to say that the femur bone will regrow. If there still is a big difference in limb lengths then we could shorten the longer femur or use inserts but that is a decision for way down the road. He also said that it is easier to deal with a limb difference than not having a hip that does not work. (I had quick flash backs of what I learned in Anatomy and Physiology Class, understanding what he is talking about and recognizing most words but at the same time thinking, this is happening to our little girl and she has been through so much already.) There will also be some other considerations once he gets in there but these are the big ones.

He said he is not sure if he will do her tendon surgery in her calf as well but will know more and most likely will do it so she will not need another surgery.

He also gave us information to contact the Prosthetics and Orthotics company. He ordered her Denis Brown Bar and shoes so we can continue with her club feet treatment. We have an appointment set up for July 8th to get fitted for that. We hope that our insurance will cover this because it is a durable medical piece of equipment. We of course will still get it even if it is not covered.

Here are some of the things we learned about Sophie Wei's condition from her doctors:

Congenital hip abnormalities are higher in girls, more common in the left foot and Sophie Wei's is the right which is not normally seen.
Can be from being born in the breech position.
He eased our minds that she should not be in any pain as for now.
On the top of the femur there is a ball and that has not developed normally and it is very important that she has this fixed to help reduce severe problems later in life for example arthritis.
The top of her femur does not fit into her hip socket.
He will know more about the tendons and ligaments once he is in surgery.
He noticed the way she walks and Rick talked with him about how stiff she when she first gets up to walk after sitting down.
She will have a full body cast on. From the chest down, full right leg and half left. There will be an area left open to go to the bathroom. Not sure who the diaper will work but he did say that for kids that are potty trained parents have not had problems, only one did.
She will be in the hospital for at least three days.
We will be at a different location for the surgery which we feel very comfortable where it is, up on the Hill at Dornbeckers!

They will be calling us in a around two weeks for surgery. Tentatively the surgery will be in four to six weeks, that is the first opening. She will be in a full body cast for six weeks. No therapy right away because she needs to remain stiff for a while to keep the healing going and then therapy.

Today was also a very big day for our good friend Mike.

We were unable to attend his change of command ceremony due to it being out of town but we are SO HAPPY for his new position. He is going to be in charge of a very prestigious Motor Life Boat School for the US Coast Guard. We know you will miss running your station on down on the coast and we will miss traveling down there to see you and the pottery place but it will be so sweet for you guys to go back home for a while! Just think where the Russell's began.

So thankful for the Amundson's for bringing us over dinner yesterday for today! Once again we are so blessed with the support of our friends and family. Thanks everyone for the emails and comments. We do appreciate and read them all. We are just having a hard time keeping up with the reply's.

As I go to bed tonight I pray for Sophie Wei's health and her continued transition in a positive direction, her bonding with our family, for Simnon's transition/adjustment and for Rick & I to have the strength to remain positive and provide a healthy environment for Sophie Wei and Simone so they do not sense our worries about this procedure, to live for today and enjoy every moment.

So for now I will continue to get caught on blogging about our trip to China but after that I be putting my camera away for a while and take a brake from blogging so I can just enjoy our family.

I will still be posting home updates and medical updates but less photos and entry's. We really do appreciate everyones prayers and find great comfort in reading other friends blogs.

I feel that I need more sleep and I usually blog after everyone has gone to bed. I also need to devote more time to my work outs. I was doing so good the past few months thanks to motivation from my friend Beth and fellow school friends but a few weeks before we went to China my progress halted. At the time I was OK with it because so MUCH had to be done but I need to get back on track!!

Yesterday and the day before was my first day back running and I could barely do three miles. I started watching the timer at twelve minutes and had to turn my speed way down. Honestly I find huge comfort in eating during stressful times but when I am working out it keeps my focus on healthy eating in check. I also benefit greatly in the results from the exercise and sleep better which I need a lot of that now.

I am also reflecting back on the verse that I found on Shanas(click here for her blog) blog, Remembering that God is in control and we are so thankful for him:

Come to me and rest in my loving presence. You know that this day will bring difficulties, and you are trying to think your way through those trials. Spillane Cousins

Our Cousins Zack and Danny! (Zack was born on my 30th Birthday!!! On the 27th of this month he turns 4 and I turn 34. He is my Birthday Bud and I am so lucky to share a Birthday with him!! IT is so special since his Dad is one of my favorite cousins!! )

I love the messy mirror in the play room. I can not keep it clean!!! Seeing all the hand prints and kisses on it remind me of how much fun they are having in there!

Simone and Sophie Wei are wearing their new outfits from their cousins: Pat, Liz, Zack and Danny.
We spent the afternoon this day hanging out in our back yard. Sophie Wei does not like to walk on grass!! Simone did not either when she was little.

We also purchased new shoes for Sophie Wei at Nordstrom. My friend Becca told me that Nordstrom will sell you two different sized shoes. We are so happy to find this out because they will do it for ANY BRAND for anyone that has a medical issue. They were so good with us and brought out so many different pairs of shoes. We ended up with this strudy Stride Right shoe. (The specialist asked us to make sure we do not get her shoes where her feet will get banged up and try to protect her feet so she does not have scabs for surgery.) She told us not to always rely on this brand for Sophie Wei because they are normally wider, it just happens that this shoe was not. NORDSTROM you are the best and thanks for doing this for so many people.

CHENGDU, China (CNN)by Kyung Lah -- When the magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck China's Sichuan Province in May, killing nearly 70,000 people, it hit home for Americans Rick and Michele Houston.

Sophie Wei was awaiting adoption when a devastating earthquake struck China's Sichuan Province.

The teachers, who live in Washington state, had been waiting for nearly three years to adopt Sophie Wei. Her orphanage was at the quake's epicenter and the Houstons feared the worst.

"When they said Chengdu, China, I said, 'Oh no,'" Rick said. "Within two weeks, we're supposed to get Sophie, and boom, there it is."

"I thought, 'catastrophe,'" Michele said as she gripped the photograph of the beautiful, smiling girl the orphanage had sent her. "My friends who've been pregnant, they can feel their babies inside of them. For me, I hold onto that photo. I put it everywhere. I just love her, that's all I know."

Just before the quake struck, the Houstons had received the final stamp of approval enabling them to pick up their daughter from the orphanage. But in the aftermath of the tragedy, information about international adoptions slowed to a crawl. Then, the Chinese government told them their adoption would be put on hold indefinitely.

"It's been hard," Michele said. "Sometimes, it's like, is it ever going to happen still?"

CNN traveled to the province just days after the earthquake struck. Based on information supplied by the Houstons, the CNN news crew located the damaged Chengdu orphanage where Sophie Wei lived.

The girl was pointing to pictures of her American family -- mom, dad and her older sister, Simone, 4, who had been adopted from China a few years ago.

CNN took video of Sophie, happy and safe, and sent the video file to the Houstons, via the Internet.

"Oh my gosh, there's our picture album," exclaimed Michele as she looked at the video. "There's the photos we sent her. She's so beautiful."

"Is that my sister?" Simone asked.

"That's your sister!" Rick responded.

It took the Houstons almost a year to adopt Simone. But the process for adopting Sophie took three times as long and took a toll on the couple. International children adopted in the U.S. »

"It's hard to have faith with everything that's gone on," said Michele. "I just hope we can see her soon."

A week after seeing their daughter on video, the Houstons got their wish. China began processing international adoptions again. Rick and Michele traveled to Chengdu just days after the government gave them the green light.

Once they arrived in China, they drove straight to the orphanage. Sophie Wei was waiting and pointed at Michele the moment she saw her mom.

"I can't believe it," said Michele, choking back the tears as she squeezed her daughter. "It feels like, wow. Is this really real?"

For now, the Houstons are relieved their daughter is safe and settling into her new home.

"Our family is complete now," Rick said.

Update Correct Information

UPDATE = I also learned about three days ago that what we were told about being the first family in Chengdu after the earthquake to adopt was incorrect information!

We were told by our guide, at the orphanage and at the Civil Affairs Office. Through my Chengdu Yahoo Group I have learned from another Mom that their family was blessed to be in Chengdu adopting their little one during June 2nd -June 6th.

I am thankful that we have now received accurate information from her. We and other families (Mom's that I have been in touch with via email and Chengdu Yahoo Group) were told by the CCAA that we were put on hold from May 28th - June 4th.

Yes, I am puzzled as to why we and many others were put on hold during that time but happy for this family at the same time. It is a bit confusing and I also did not want to give out inaccurate information.

It also makes me think how thankful and blessed we are to have our little girl home and we can now just focus on our health and living life as a family.

Call From Specialist

This morning we received a phone call from the Pediatric Orthopedic Specialists Nurse and he scheduled us for tomorrow, Friday, at 1:30 in the afternoon.

Thanks for everyone caring about Sophie Wei and your concern for her.

We will keep you all posted.

We were blessed with another home cooked meal from Rachel and yummy chocolate cake/brownie dish that was a hit with all of us. Sophie liked her new Lipa's (spelling?)!!!!! You are such a good cook. Thanks!

We also had a nice visit from my friend Kris, her husband Brian and two of her three children, Meaghan and Jacob. Simone had fun showing them her little play room. We have been craving Papa Murphy's Pizza so they brought us one for tomorrow nights dinner which will be nice after coming home from meeting with Sophie Wei's specialist. Thanks for stopping by and for the grub.

Mail, Mommy Time, Pool Time and Colemans

Since I checked the mail late last night the girls did not get to open their package until this morning. They received mail from our Spillane Cousins! It was so cute. Liz had hand stamped, "Little Sister Sophie and Big Sister Simone" on each of their bags. Simone really appreciated seeing her name on her bag and though she was pretty neat. Sophie Wei loved her bag because she likes to pile all of her toys in there.

Below you can see that Simone is so happy about her Dora hair pretty/brush/mirror bag!! She loves Dora and asks us all the time if we can count in Spanish.

Simone also loved the hand made card. She is starting to learn how to read and sounds out letters so it was fun when she would recognize a word or her name. She also loved the photo of Zack and Danny on the inside.
The transition at home has its ups and downs. At times Simone finds it hard to share her Mommy but has been doing better. Simone is starving for some "Mommy Time" so I created a special time with her and I while Sophie Wei is down for a nap. We work on one letter, words that start with that letter, a picture that starts with that letter and then work on a shape. I am so thankful that she is into and enjoys doing this. (As you can see our kitchen counter is getting deeper by the day and I have no energy to clean it up, for now.)

After Sophie Wei awoke from her nap we said it would be pool time!!! They took off their clothes so fast and were in the pool before I knew it. I was gathering towells while Rick was outside with them. I love these photos. You can click on them to enlarge them to see their facial expressions. Sophie Wei's diaper inflated, that was so funny. They were loving it.

Coleman's. Sue and Matthew came over for dinner tonight. Sue made us yummy Broccoli Pasta with White Alfredo Sauce that was so yummy, fresh bread and Watermelon. The kids also loved the Chocolate Milk they brought over!!
Simone absolutely loves the fairy wings from Denise and Maggie!!! She uses them almost every day and she looks so cute in them.

Sophie Wei Visits Her Pediatrician Has Her First Physical

Today Sophie Wei went to see her Pediatrician who we just love. He is such a kind, gentle, knowledgeable and patient man! We are so lucky to have in our lives.

As Sophie Wei's Doctor was examining her he asked us if we just saw her hip move the way it did? I did not but Rick did and started to get a little light headed since he has had many issues with when he dislocated his shoulder when he played football. The doctor asked him if he needed to sit down and he did so he walked to the side of the table where Rick was holding Sophie Wei and went to rest. I was holding Simone. Rick then needed to go outside for a breather. I felt so bad for both Rick and Sophie.

During the physical we learned that she has a dislocated hip and possible nerve issues, all with her right leg. They may also take a look at the part of her brain that controls motor development but that will be down the road most likely. That might be why her right leg is not growing at the same rate as her left one.....He reassured us that it is not the same part of the brain as her cognitive development, I had to ask because at that point my brain could not recall all I learned in college, I was a little shaken up because we knew about her club feet but did not expect this. Her recovery with her club feet is also on the game plan but secondary to her hip issue. He also mentioned some thing about her heels and that she might also need a tendon lengthening surgery as well.

Simone was such a good girl during the exam. She was concerned for her sister and asked, "why is her hip hurt?" I told her it was because, "that's how God made her." Then the doctor said some thing sweet but I can't remember exactly what he said? It was some thing like yes that is true but we are going to help her get it fixed. I had to hold back the tears.

Sophie Wei also did well as could be expected during the physical. She is starting to show more bonding signs and was a little leery of this doctor so that was a good step. She just fussed a little and then as time went by things went smoother. She is such an easy going little girl.

The Doctor talked about many things and one of them is that Sophie Wei was possibly born this way but the specialists will be able to tell us more after the exam and x-rays.

After we were done we went down to the lap so she could have her blood drawn for a tider (spelling?) test and parasite check. (Checking on her lead levels, immunization levels, etc.) In Simone's case she had been immunized but after her tider test nothing showed up so we had to re-immunize her. Most likely it is because of how the medicine was stored or how it was given to her? The reason why we are checking for parasites is due to her small size, etc. just to make sure she is healthy, just a precaution. Having eight viles (spelling?) of blood taken was hard on Sophie Wei and us. I do have to say that they did a good, fast job though!

Her Doctor referred us to a specialist and we are waiting for them to call us for an appointment.

Sophie Wei has now had three nights of consistent sleep, thanks to the antibiotics. Her Doctor said that her ears look better and so does her mouth.

We are also very thankful for Sue making Broccoli, Alfredo Sauce, Pasta and Strawberries tonight. Then we had ice cream. We also enjoyed our time visiting with her and her son Matthew.

On The Mend

Sorry it has been so long since a post but things are finally settling down, I hope.

It all started on the long plane ride home, although I can't complain because we met some new friends that still had to travel to the east side of the United States.

Sophie Wei was the energize bunny on the air plane!! When she finally fell asleep, two hours outside of PDX she only would sleep for ten or fifteen minutes and would wake up fussy with non stop crying. I thought to my self, there is no way we can have another repeat of our trip home with Simone???!!???!!!!........I kept watching that airplane on the map and it never seemed to move closer to home!

Since then we have not gotten much sleep at all.

We did receive a nice surprise from our family and friends who met us at the airport when we arrived home. It was so sweet and brought tears to our eyes. They had signs, smiles and hugs for us. We love you all and know how early it was for you to make it to the airport.

I also got to introduce Sophie Wei to Sophi, who she is named after. As I introduced her I could not stop from crying...I have waited for almost three years to do this and the moment was finally here.

Before seeing everyone we were delayed a bit going through immigration. We went into the non citizen line when we arrived per the recommendation of the US Consulates Advice on thinking it would go faster for us but it did not. Once in the room that processes Sophie Wei's immigration paper work we were around ninth in line.....So we got to sit there, for a while while everyone waited for us. We could not help but here the officer question people as to why they wanted to come to America. The first girls story did not add up and he gave her a PO Box Address instead of a physical address so she had to sit down and wait. The next girl was young and her story kept changing as to why she was coming to America and I think she new it. The officer told her that she had a 70% chance that she was getting back on a plane for China and only a 30% chance that she was staying in America. WOW, that was a learning experience. While sitting there Sophie Wei started to pick at her hair click and I said to her, "Boo-Yaw, Shay Say" (No Thank You) and she started to cry. In the very small room it sounded very loud but ended up helping us because the officer could not continue his conversation. He called me over and told me quietly that he was going to try and get another officer to come in and process our paper work....After five minutes we were called and told we could go. We will receive Sophie Wei's US Citizenship Paper work in about a month. Yah!

Just as we walked down the long hallway to our friends and family that was waiting I got chills knowing this will be the last time, we are bringing our baby home!

After seeing everyone I told them why we were late and that they are most likely going to be sending two back to their home country. After saying that someone told me that this nice gentleman (they pointed to him) was waiting for his wife to come still. (A few of my friends had talked to him or his parents that were waiting with him and that is how they got his story. This young man is in the military and married his wife while he was stationed over seas. I guess they only got to be together for a few months before he came back to America and they have been waiting to be together ever sense.) I felt so bad and hoped that she was not one of the two that the officer was not liking their story. While holding onto his rose for his wife he waited and waited while we all visited. We visited long enough to see his wife come down the long hallway! She made it. Yah-who!

When we arrived home Becca and Rachel helped put the girl's room together. Simone is borrowing Laurens twin bed and Rachel and Becca purchased bedding for it and got a mattress. Simone loves her big girl bed! Becca and Jeni also finished going through Sophie Wei's closet since we now know what size she is. Sue purchased fresh strawberries, apples, peaches and other snacks for us for us.....Ah, FRESH FRUIT!! The Watson's also had a warm, yummy dinner for us with SALAD!

Since we have arrived we have also received many phone calls from family and friends. Yummy dinner and good company from the Kuhlmans and Kimi and Chris, Craig and Lisa also had us over for a wonderful pork chop dinner with FRESH FRUIT and SALAD!! Yes, as you can tell I missed fresh fruit and salad (the kind of fruit that has skin on it, they did have pineapple, pears and bananas in China but I missed strawberries, apples and peaches.) We also received a gift certificate for Meals To Go from Carmen, Andrea L, and Andrea M. What a great idea. We also have more dinners coming from friends and we are so thankful for that! THANK YOU everyone for your help.

Becca also has some great video of Simone playing with Cooper, while the Hettingers stopped by for a visit....... It is so funny. I will post it in the next few days. It will be worth the wait.

After a few nights of no sleep and thinking maybe Sophie has an ear infection or some thing else just like Simone did when we got home we finally took her to the doctor yesterday because she has been such a great sleeper until the trip home and felt some thing was wrong. Sure enough she has an inflamed left ear and her right ear could not be seen because she has so much wax in it and it would take a few days for it to loosen and then be soft enough to pull out. They sent us home with antibiotics to help with that. She also has a viral infection in her mouth with a lot of blisters in it. (That is why she has not liked having her teeth brushed and why her mouth would bleed so bad during the teeth brushing.)

So Sophie Wei has more than a little cold.

Tonight Sophie Wei has been sleeping for two hours straight and that is why I am able to do this quick post. Simone made it an hour and a half. I went up to talk to her and now she is sleeping again. We are praying for a good night!!! We all need some solid sleep but we can't complain because we are the happiest parents in the world having our two little girls sleeping up stairs.

I am also going to try and catch up on our last few days in China. I will post them up front but then move them back in order since I am using this blog as a scrap book. For those of you that do not know, sorry about the blogging in China. We were unable to blog any more or check our email, not sure why but we can only guess??!!?? When we arrived home every thing was fine???

We are also very proud of Simone today!! She did great at Gymnastics today with Teacher Nasko. It is a big girl class with no parents. She had Rick come out during warm ups but he was able to stand off to the side. Then about ten minutes later Emma arrived and that helped a lot. Also seeing Sara in the warm ups helped too. Rick then moved to the parents viewing area with me. Too bad Emma has to move to another gymnastics day because she is moving up a level, already! Way to go Emma. I am sure though that Sara and Simone will both get into the hang of things soon. Nasco was so good with Simone. He knows just how to take care of her and push her at the same time. She had a blast! My friend Tami also made the day special for Simone by putting Big Girl Glitter in her hair after she was done. You should of seen her smile, it was so big and she thought she was pretty cool. Thanks Tami! Tami told us that she has a big gift for Simone, she ordered her a PANDA Gymnastics Leotard!!! Hannah will have one too so that is going to be fun for Simone to see her wearing one too especially since she is an amazing gymnist.

Then this afternoon Sophie Wei and I took a very long nap. I needed that. Sophie Wei was still fussy through but I think she got some rest? Then Rachel, Lauren and Jake came over for a nice visit. I also talked to Rachel about when I put Sophie Wei to bed tonight. I told her that I have read about bonding and attachment and some where I learned that you should not let them cry it out for a while.......She also reminded me to just go with what I feel is right. Tonight after I put her to bed she fussed for a while, I walked out of the room and waited a few minutes. I then went back in and held her for a while. She snuggled in and sucked on her two fingers. I then put her down. She was fine. Then started to cry. I layed down next to the crib on Simone's twin bed and she cried some more. I put my hand through the crib and she pushed it away. I asked Simone to pretend she was a sleep and she was a good sport and only talked softly. She cried some more again. Then she stopped. She put her hand through the crib and squeezed my nose a couple of times. (I tried not to laugh). Then she faked cried and put her hands up for me to pick her up. A few times during all of this I told her I loved her in English and Chinese and said go to sleep, lay down. Then she picked up her water bottle and was feeding her baby and kissing it. The whole time I was pretending to be asleep and peeking though my eyes. She fusses some more and then lays down and goes to sleep. What Rachel reminded me is that I just have to do what is right. It felt right tonight to do this and I am so glad I did. Some times I over worry and try to do what books recommend. I guess all that I have learned as being a Mom and all of the things that I am still learning is to continue to go with my gut, what I feel and along the way remember what I have read or learned but just go with it.

I better get ready for the kids to wake up. I will try to start posting the last few posts from China if I can tonight but I also need to get some sleep.

We are also taking Sophie Wei back into the doctors tomorrow to get things moving for her medically in regards to her feet, basic check up, recheck and a tider test (spelling).

Chengdu Traffic

Here are two videos of the traffic in Chengdu that I wanted to post while in China but could not. I can just sit and watch for what seems like forever. There seems to be a sense of harmony and people here really do not get to upset at each other like we do in America while driving. Sure they honk their horns once in a while but then go about life.

Still Not Sleeping

Pinch me!! OUR DAUGHTER IS HOME!! She is such a sweet little girl....Such a blessing!! Sophie Wei has on the same dress we brought Simone home in. Gives me chills seeing her in the same outfits that Simone use to wear.
Sophie Wei is still not sleeping so therefore we are not either. None of us. Starting to wonder if she is sick. I am thinking that if she does not sleep well tonight we will take her in to the doctors tomorrow. Wishing I would of turned in my insurance paper work on Friday although I am not sure how I would of done that since I was not feeling well and just got home.....

Day Two At Home

Day two at Home with not much sleep. Sophie Wei is still very fussy and we have not been sleeping much at all.....You can see by these photos that she is tiered and sick. We need sleep and we are all trying to get into some sort of a routine. We are so thankful for all of our friends and family for all of the help.

Sophie is fitting into her family and home like she's always been there, and Simone has taken on her role as big sister with gusto! It's so wonderful to finally see them all together.

I think that's the first time I've used that expression literally! I just checked and their flight left Tokyo a few minutes ago! Since I have received no calls from them, I think it's safe to assume they're on the plane on their way home. The flight from Guangzhou to Tokyo departed and arrived on schedule, and the Tokyo to Portland flight left on time as well. They should land on US soil in 9 hours, with Sophie Wei becoming an official US Citizen! I can't wait to see them as a family of four for the first time in person!
